Paper airplanes were made as far back as ancient China. But the most significant use of paper airplanes was by the Wright brothers, who employed them in creating their designs. The Wrights observed the flexing of their paper models in a wind tunnel and intuited that this could help them control the flight of an airplane. From these simple observations came the hinged aileron and elevator surfaces -- which still guide modern aircraft.
